Start selling — easy as peeling a banana 🍌
For everyone, everywhere: home cooks, home sellers, home services and event organizers.
Open your shop — 1 minute
- Your name, shop name, email and phone. You get your own address like yourname.34m4.com. Free.
Add what you sell
- Take a photo with your phone, type a name and price. Thrift Shop items (new or pre-loved clothes, furniture, electronics) and services (cleaning, tutoring, sewing…) can be ordered right away.
Share your link & get paid
- Post your shop on Facebook, Viber and TikTok. Customers pay cash or check in person — or by card once you connect Stripe (5 minutes).
Seeing Link? Link (link.com or app.link.com) is a Stripe service that helps connect your bank. Stripe handles your shop payments and payouts. Your bank account stays yours.
🍲 Selling home-made food? One extra step
Add your menu any time — food just shows "ordering opens soon" until you type your permit number in My Shop → Settings.
Cottage Food registration — the easy one: cheaper, usually approved in days, available in every California county.
MEHKO permit — about 30–45 days, where your county allows it:
- ✅ Meals allowed (MEHKO): Los Angeles County, Long Beach, Riverside County, San Diego County, Alameda County (Oakland, Fremont…), Berkeley, Contra Costa County, San Mateo County (Daly City…), Santa Clara County (San Jose…), Solano County, Sonoma County
- ❓ Ask your county: Pasadena, Orange County, San Bernardino County, other California counties and other states
- 🚫 Meals not allowed yet: San Francisco, New York — sell snacks & sweets with Cottage Food (California) or the home-processor registration (New York) instead.
Food for invited guests at your own party needs no permit. A temple or nonprofit may serve its members and guests up to 3 days in any 90 days without one.
Step by step: getting a MEHKO permit (Los Angeles County)
Get your food safety certificates
- Pass a Certified Food Protection Manager exam (ServSafe or another ANSI-accredited provider). It is valid for 5 years.
- Everyone who helps you cook or serve — family included — needs a California Food Handler Card (a short online course).
- Free training may be available through LA County DEO / Inclusive Action workshops or America’s Job Centers of California.
Apply for your MEHKO permit
- Download the county’s "Starting Your MEHKO Business" checklist and the permit roadmap.
- Fill in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) form — your menu, and how you shop, cook, store food and clean.
- Submit the SOP and copies of your certificates to LA County Public Health — Environmental Health.
- Fees: $597 application review (one time) + $347 permit every year. The 2026 county fee waiver ended on June 30, 2026 — ask the county if new help is available.
- Live in Pasadena, Long Beach or Vernon? Those cities have their own health departments — contact them instead.
- Also check whether your city requires a business license.
Pass the home inspection & know the rules
- An inspector visits your kitchen (inspection guide). When you pass, you receive your permit.
- Limits: 30 meals a day, 90 a week, $100,000 food sales a year. 34M4 counts for you and stops orders at your limit.
- You or someone in your household hands over or delivers the food — no DoorDash or Uber Eats.
- Food must be prepared, cooked and served or delivered on the same day.
- Your permit number must be shown — 34M4 displays it on your shop automatically.
🧺 Thrift Shop & Services — good to know
Selling household items, used electronics or clothes? No food permit needed. If you sell regularly in California, get a free seller’s permit from the CDTFA for sales tax. Don’t sell recalled items.
Offering services (home cleaning, babysitting, tutoring…)? No food permit needed. You may need a city business license. Babysitting in the family’s home needs no license (registering with TrustLine is recommended); caring for other families’ children in your own home requires a California Family Child Care license.
🎟 Concerts, fundraisers & temple events — sell tickets online
No more selling tickets by phone. In My Shop → Items, choose Event Tickets, set the date, place and how many tickets. Each ticket type (General, VIP, Donation…) is its own item. Buyers get a QR code by email; at the door, open My Shop → Check-in and scan with your phone. Sales stop when sold out or when the event starts. Cash at the door works too. Card fee for tickets: only 1% to 34M4 + Stripe’s fee.
This guide is general information (October 2026), not legal advice. Rules and fees change — confirm with LA County Home-Based Food Operations at (626) 430-9855.
